The Jakarta Police seized 350 boxes of face masks during a raid on the residence of a suspected hoarder in Tanjung Duren, Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta in the wake of panic buying that hit the capital city on Monday following the announcement of the country’s first confirmed COVID-19 cases.“The Tanjung Duren Police have confiscated 350 boxes of face masks from various brands at an apartment in Grogol,” Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.Separately, West Jakarta Police’s general crimes unit head, Comr. Teuku Arsya, confirmed the raid had taken place. However, he was still tight-lipped about the number of suspects apprehended. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s announcement of the country’s first confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases on Monday rattled many Jakartans, some of whom reacted to the news by frantically flocking to stores across the city to stock up on medical supplies and other essentials, including face masks and hand sanitizer.Panic buying has prompted a price surge for such items both online and offline in the last two days, with a box of face masks now selling for an average of Rp 300,000 (US$ 21) – a whopping 1,500 percent increase from the original average of Rp 20,000 per box.In response to the phenomenon, the National Police have announced that it will bring those known to have hoarded masks and hand sanitizer to justice.“We are carrying out an investigation to sniff out any illegal stockpiling,” said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Argo Yuwono. (rfa)Topics :

Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Irene Vida Gala, has revealed that her embassy is yet to issue out visas for interested applicants who would want to witness the greatest soccer event in the world, the 2014 FIFA World Cup.With just three months to the event, Madam Gala has advised all interested applicants to be proactive in their bid to successfully secure visas for the 20th edition of the World Cup.“I think that Ghanaians who may be thinking of going to Brazil should immediately start actions considering the short time available,” she said.“If I have 4000 visas to give within the last two weeks to the tournament, I will not be able to do that due to the delay on the part of the consumers and that would create problems.“Prepare as soon as possible to present your visas because we’re making it very easy but we can’t do everything in a matter of two or three weeks. Her Excellency Irene Vida Gala also revealed that visas to her country are free should one hold a World Cup match ticket and as a result her outfit has not issued visa to any Ghanaian fan yet . “It’s very easy to get visas once a person has secured tickets for matches because the ticket allows you to get a visa. The main concerns for Ghanaians should be to get match tickets and once that is done, you can easily go the visas for the World Cup which are free.“I haven’t yet given any visas for the World Cup with the exception of those who are going ahead of time to work or to do some kind of early preparations,” she said. The 2014 FIFA World Cup runs from the 12th of June to the 13th of July.
That the end for Steve Nash might have come on a languid Sunday night in the middle of November as a member of Lakers during a blowout loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves is rife with all sorts of irony and conflict. It’s mostly a painful reminder the longer you hang on the less likely the finish will be glorious. And some plans are better off left in the desk drawer. But also how every ending offers the opportunity to create a new beginning.Even for a proud franchise like the Lakers, who are approaching one of the more critical crossroads in their history. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error A championship in year one might have been too ambitious, but we fully expected them to be finalizing a run at a title this season. And with it, Bryant finally would catch Michael Jordan with six NBA championships. It all seemed within reach two summers ago. What we couldn’t account for was Howard’s indifference to being a Laker, Nash’s aging body and how Bryant would push himself so hard to salvage a playoff appearance he destroyed his Achilles in the process. And how the convergence of all of those factors would lead to the catastrophe we now witness when the Lakers take the floor each night. In one form or another they are all gone now, Howard fleeing to Houston, Nash sidelined with back and leg injuries, Bryant making his way down the long, lonely road of rehabilitation and Gasol overwhelmed as the focal point on a mediocre team.Nash may return, but for how long and at what level?Bryant will return, but no guarantee he will be close to the same player he was before the injury. And even if they both come back at some semblance of their former selves, will it really matter in an unforgiving Western Conference loaded with youthful talent and spry legs?Which brings us back to Sunday night and the sight of a proud veteran like Nash hobbling off the court, his 39-year-old body betraying him and his frustrated face portraying doubt and apprehension of an uncertain future. And what it all means for Nash and the Lakers. Thus far, he has given no indication this will be the end for him, even though it’s looking less and less likely the Lakers can rely on him for heavy minutes or back-to-back games. His pride and professionalism will push him to come back, partly out of responsibility to the $18 million he’s still owed but also to craft a more fitting end to his career. In the back of his mind, Nash, like the Lakers, still holds out hope he and Bryant can return to orchestrate one last run together. It’s all they have at this point, and with the money already spent they will cling to that dream as long as possible. The heart may be willing for Bryant and Nash, but the body might not be capable. As we sit here today, the best-case scenario is maybe the eighth or seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs — although that seems far-fetched — and an immediate dismissal in the first round.None of which will do the Lakers any good in a league where wallowing in the middle gets you nowhere.Meanwhile, the tantalizing possibilities of one of the deepest drafts in years and the prospect of more than $50 million dollars to spend in an intriguing free-agent class is pulling our attention from this year to next summer. And thoughts we never thought we’d entertain begin circling in our heads.Such as encouraging Bryant to not rush his comeback, even if it means sitting out the entire season. And privately hoping Nash decides to walk away as a medical casualty, free to collect his entire salary while the Lakers wipe his entire contract off the books for next season.Or wistfully wondering what Gasol could command on the trade market, his health intact and his talent still capable of providing a complementary piece to a championship-caliber team. Finally, the Lakers artfully avoiding the playoffs in order to increase their chances of garnering a premium first-round draft pick.Admit it. All of those thoughts have crossed your mind recently. When Nash limped off the court Sunday, it wasn’t a time to regretfully ponder what could have been, but instead a chance to focus on what might be.It’s a future that undoubtedly will require difficult decisions to be made and mean the Lakers and their fans incurring pain to which they are not accustomed. But that’s just the way it is when you are beginning from ground zero, which is where the Lakers stand at the moment. When Nash limped from the Staples Center court three days ago, he represented the final piece of a would-be Lakers dynasty that crumbled before our very eyes. And one we now know had little chance of ever coming to fruition.Dwight Howard never wanted to be here, Nash never should have been here and placing the two of them alongside Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol under one coach the Lakers didn’t believe in and another whose philosophy contradicted the personnel was the epitome of a major reach. We all bought into it at the time. So to retroactively blame Mitch Kupchak or Jim Buss for the failed outcome would be disingenuous. In theory, the grouping of Nash, Howard, Bryant and Gasol seemed wise and prudent — four All-Star caliber players in one starting lineup, the best center in the game, Nash running the point and Bryant free from ball-handling duties, preserving energy through the early stages of games and carrying the Lakers down the stretch. The possibilities seemed limitless.
They say your best players have to be your best players if you want to win in the playoffs. The Sharks’ best players were at their dominant best in Game 1 against the Golden Knights.Brent Burns, Joe Pavelski, Erik Karlsson, Evander Kane, Joe Thornton and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, a large representation of the Sharks’ “core” all figured in on the scoring. However there was a tangible team physicality that was as important for the Sharks as the Big Guys lighting the lamp.ARE YOU INTERESTED OR ARE YOU …
10 May 2007Shaun Pollock was named South Africa’s Cricketer of the Year at the Mutual & Federal Cricketer of the Year Awards in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening. He succeeded Makhaya Ntini who had won the award the previous two years. Before Ntini’s successes, Jacques Kallis had also won the award two years in succession.Pollock’s award capped a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the all-rounder after many people, experts and fans included, had considered his international career over, his best days behind him.Remarkable control, nagging accuracyEven early in the season, it appeared he might be lacking the zip that was previously present in his bowling. To a degree, that might be true, but Pollock made up for his reduced pace with remarkable control and nagging accuracy.Going back to August 2006, he managed only 1 for 112 in 35 overs, facing Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Certainly, he didn’t appear to be on song and concern that it might be the end of the road for him could have been justified. However, after returning to South Africa, Pollock answered any criticism in style when the Proteas hosted India in both one-day international and test series.StiflingIn the ODI series, opening the bowling, Pollock stifled India’s batting efforts, conceding a miserly 2.30 runs per over, while also capturing eight wickets at an average of only 8.30. It was the kind of return that one might expect in schoolboys’ cricket, but not at international level. In the first test match at The Wanderers, the Indians shocked South Africa, racing to a 123-run victory, but Pollock definitely didn’t let the Proteas down. He weighed-in with five and 40 with the bat as South Africa made only 84 and 278, while he shone with the ball, knocking over 4 for 39 and 3 for 33.Although he captured only one wicket in the second test, which South Africa won by 174 runs to level the series, Pollock’s return of 1 for 37 in 23.5 overs again told a story, his tight economy exerting pressure on the Indian batsmen, which helped the other South African bowlers pick up wickets. After making 11 in the first innings, he played an important knock the second time around, making an undefeated 63.Test series victoryA five-wicket victory in the third test saw South Africa secure a 2-1 series victory.India batted well in their first innings, tallying 414 all out but, again, they were unable to assume control over Pollock who picked up 4 for 75 in just less than 30 overs. He then contributed 15 to South Africa’s reply of 373 all out.In their second innings, the Indians collapsed to 169 all out as the pitch became increasingly difficult. Pollock claimed 1 for 24.Then, in South Africa’s second innings, he was sent in at number four; this was because of his shot-making ability on a pitch that the batsmen were struggling to score runs upon. That decision paid off as he scored an important 37 to help guide the Proteas to the win.As in the one-day international series, the ginger-haired all-rounder was named man of the series. To the foreWhen Pakistan toured South Africa after the Indians, Pollock was again to the fore as the Proteas won the ODI series 3-1, and the test series 2-1.Pollock had a quieter test series against Pakistan, but finished fifth in the South African batting averages. He picked up eight wickets at 23.37, but his runs per over rate was again exemplary at 2.79.When the one-day international series came around, however, he was back to his match-winning best.SA won the first ODI at Centurion by a mammoth 164 runs as the team’s batsmen took the spotlight. It was Pakistan’s batsmen that flourished in the second ODI as the visitors tallied 351 for 4 to claim a huge 141-run victory. Pollock claimed 1 for 53 and scored 32 off 34 balls, but in the context of the game it wasn’t enough to make a significant impact. After rain forced a no result in the third ODI, the teams headed to Cape Town.Crucial roleSouth Africa annihilated Pakistan, racing to a 10-wicket victory, whilst needing only 14 overs at the crease. The result had a lot to do with Pollock’s effort with the ball. He strangled the Pakistani batting effort, capturing 2 for 13 in his 10 overs. His crucial part in the outcome of the game was recognised as he was named man of the match. The fifth ODI proved to be another tour de force for the star all-rounder. Bowling brilliantly, he removed five of the top six batsmen as he knocked over 5 for 23. That effort spurred South Africa to an emphatic nine-wicket victory and Pollock to a second man of the match award in succession. Not surprisingly, he was named man of the series.World CupAt the Cricket World Cup, South Africa disappointed despite reaching the semi-finals; after all, the Proteas had entered the tournament ranked number one in the world.Pollock started slowly, but as the event progressed he returned to form. By the end of the tournament, he was once again South Africa’s most economical bowler, having conceded only 3.52 runs per over in a competition that had proved very harsh on bowlers. It was clear after this that Pollock was the leading candidate for South Africa’s cricketer of the year, and so it proved as he won the award.Test starGritty left-handed batsman Ashwell Prince, who came on in leaps and bounds, was named the Castle Test Cricketer of the Year Award. He was comfortably the highest run scorer on either side in the test series against India, tallying 306 runs at an average of 61.20.Against Pakistan, his aggregate of 240 runs was second only to Jacques Kallis. Prince again topped the batting averages at 60, having made a century and a fifty, as he did against India.Recognised by fellow professionalsThe tigerish Mark Boucher earned the prestigious South African Players’ Player of the Year Award as his fellow professionals recognised his determined and hard-working contributions.Left-arm spinner Paul Harris, who settled into test cricket with surprising smoothness against India and Pakistan, was named the South African Newcomer of the Year.Jacques Kallis, who excelled at the World Cup, scoring 483 runs at 80.83, which took him past 9 000 runs in one-day internationals, was named the Standard Bank ODI Cricketer of the Year.Fan favouriteSupporters of the national team didn’t forget Makhaya Ntini as the charismatic fast bowler was named the SuperSport Fans Cricketer of the Year.Despite South Africa’s dismal exit from the World Cup in the West Indies, where they crashed out to Australia in the semi-finals, Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola was upbeat in his assessment of the 2006-07 season.“The disappointing results of the World Cup must be seen against the backdrop of the Proteas producing one of the best international seasons since unity,” Majola said.‘We will now build on this success’“We will now build on this success for the next season as well as taking into account the lessons learnt at the World Cup.“These annual Mutual & Federal SA Cricket Awards show that diversity is our strength and we must use this diversity to our advantage.“We also have solid development and high performance structures in place and we have the talent out there to get us to the top.“We must ensure that we utilise this diverse talent in building for the future.”Domestic sceneOn the domestic scene, the Wanderers’ Chris Scott was named Groundsman of the Year for the fourth consecutive time, while Marais Erasmus was named Umpire of the Year for the second time. The Highveld Lions’ Gordon Parsons was named Coach of the Year.Morne van Wyk excelled, winning three awards: the MTN Domestic Championships Cricketer of the Year, the Standard Bank Pro20 Cricketer of the Year, and the Domestic Players’ Player of the Year.Another Free State Eagle, Ryan McLaren picked up the SuperSport Series Cricketer of the Year Award, while the Warriors’ Lonwabo Tsotsobe was named Domestic Newcomer of the Year. As part of the European Union’s antitrust agreement with Microsoft, the company will be required next year to show a list of alternatives to Internet Explorer to any Windows user with IE installed as their default browser. Love or hate the government intervention, it’s notable to see which browsers are about to get a big boost in user numbers. The EU says increased viability in the browser market will lead to more competition and more innovation. Here are the companies that will get a first crack at new levels of market viability in Europe. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting On the Front Page – The Best Known 5The first page of the Choice Screen, which users will be presented with when they first turn on their computers or when they click a link for it later, will feature whichever five browsers have the largest market share over the previous six months. Microsoft will begin showing the page to users in March, 2010.Right now the top five will include, in the order listed on an EU page about the program:Apple Safari – that’s right, even for Windows!Google Chrome – so soon. If Chrome can grow so fast, it makes you wonder if government intervention is really needed. Of course, Chrome has been promoted prominently on Google pages. That could become part of the next antitrust issue.Microsoft Internet Explorer – gets better all the time, even with dominant market share. Couldn’t the EU just require people to stop using IE 6?Mozilla Firefox – the classic that’s most effectively challenged IE. In fact, it’s done so pretty effectively. Too bad Chrome now runs circles around its performance.Opera – loved by mobile users, loved by Europeans.Below the Fold – The Smaller ChallengersUsers will be able to scroll the Choice Screen horizontally and see the next 7 most popular browsers at the time. Here’s who the EU lists as those browsers today.AOL – chuckle if you will, but AOL is doing a lot of innovative work with social networks and lifestreaming these days. Maxthon – is a popular browser in China and has its sights set on beating Opera in Europe.K-Meleon – says it’s a super-fast Windows browser built on Gecko, the same layout engine Firefox uses.Flock – is a Mozilla-powered browser that integrates a whole lot of social features. It’s got such a great feature set that we recently asked Why don’t you love Flock?Avant Browser – says that it, in fact, is the browser that’s the fastest. It includes an in-line RSS reader and a number of other interesting features.Sleipnir – is a highly-customizable browser that says it’s big in Japan.Slim Browser – a Windows browser focused on automating processes. That’s the field, so far! Do you think this move will foster increased innovation? Do you think it’s needed? Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts Tags:#Google#NYT#web A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… About two months ago, the popular music- and photo-streaming service Simplify Media suddenly shut down its services and pulled its mobile apps from Apple’s App Store. Today, we finally found out why. During his keynote presentation at Google I/O, Google’s vice president of engineering, Vic Gundotra, noted that Google has acquired Simplify Media. Google will use Simplify Media’s technology to allow Android users to stream their music directly from their desktops to their phones.Simplify Media allowed its users to access the music and photos they store on their desktop machines at home via their mobile phones. Now, Google will use this technology to power its new music syncing service for Android. Simplify Media was always one of our favorite music streaming services and we are glad to see that the company didn’t just shut down for lack of success. When Simplify Media announced that it would stop its services in March, it noted that the company was currently “unable to share our future plans at this time but hope to be able to announce the re-launch of the technology soon. In the meantime, we will continue to operate the existing service for at least the next 3 months.” Now, of course, we know why Simplify Media decided to close its doors. frederic lardinois Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market
