Austin – Jr. – Tomball, TexasRuiz won the pole vault at the Don Kirby Invitational at New Mexico with a season-best mark of 17-08.50, which is also a new top mark in Southland competition this season. Men’s Track Athlete of the Week – Daniel Shelton, Houston Baptist – Sr. – Houston, TexasShelton ran the fastest time in the conference in the 800m this season to win the event at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston, clocking a 1:52.00. He also ran a leg of the distance medley relay, helping the Huskies to a second-place finish with a time of 10:44.52. Both teams have completed their 2018 regular seasons and next head to the 2018 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala., from Feb. 21-22. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
