Manny Pacquiao beats Keith Thurman by split decision to clinch WBA Welterweight title

first_imgFrom his first-round knockdown punches to his tenacious 12th-round finish, Manny Pacquiao gave yet another one-sided thrashing to Father Time.Keith Thurman was a whole lot tougher to beat, but the 40-year-old Filipino senator managed to win that vote as well.Pacquiao floored Thurman early and persevered late to an exciting split-decision victory Saturday night, adding a third straight win to his late-career resurgence.Pacquiao (62-7-2) dropped his previously unbeaten opponent with a combination late in the first round, and the Pac-Man dominated the opening rounds with a combination of flair and power that recalled the incredible prime of the only eight-division champion in boxing history.Keith Thurman gets dropped by Manny Pacquiao in the first round! #PacThurman #ThurmanPacquiao #PacquiaoThurman pic.twitter.com/dgUXi27lunStrictly Boxing Fans (@BoxingBritain1) July 21, 2019Thurman (29-1) showed remarkable tenacity in rallying through the middle rounds, repeatedly testing Pacquiao’s chin with big shots. Neither fighter managed another knockdown, but they pushed relentlessly in front of a sellout crowd at the MGM Grand Garden that repeatedly chanted Pacquiao’s name from the moment he reached the ring.”It was fun,” Pacquiao said. “My opponent is a good fighter and boxer. He was strong. … I think he did his best, and I did my best. I think we made the fans happy tonight because it was a good fight.”Two judges scored the bout 115-112 for Pacquiao, while Glenn Feldman scored it 114-113 for Thurman. The Associated Press also scored it 115-112 for Pacquiao.”I knew it was close,” Thurman said. “He had the momentum because he got the knockdown in Round 1. … I wish I had a little bit more output to go toe to toe. My conditioning, my output was just behind Manny Pacquiao’s tonight. Tonight was a blessing and a lesson.”advertisementPacquiao appeared to be declining as recently as two years ago, when he lost a listless decision to Jeff Horn. But while his political career flourished, Pacquiao also revived his ring career with solid back-to-back victories over Lucas Matthysse and Adrien Broner.#AndTheNew WBA Welterweight Super Champion Manny Pacquiao#Respect Keith Thurman #PacquiaoThurman #WBAboxing #PacThurman pic.twitter.com/xmkVUgbRYLWBA Boxing (@WBABoxing) July 21, 2019Thurman represented another major step up in competition, but Pacquiao’s strong start quieted any speculation that he would suddenly look old in a matchup with an elite welterweight champion.Thurman’s effort was impressive on paper: He landed slightly more punches than the famously active Pacquiao, and his 192 power punches landed were the most by any Pacquiao opponent in his 43 fights that were tracked by CompuBox. But Pacquiao had a dominant jab, and he outworked Thurman in the 12th round, throwing 56 punches to win the round on two judges’ cards. Both fighters started quickly with a series of good-looking exchanges, but Pacquiao changed the bout in an instant. He moved forward to land a left to the body and a right hook that sent Thurman to the canvas with 25 seconds left in the first round.Thurman got up comfortably while the ecstatic crowd roared, but Pacquiao kept up his superior work for the next two rounds, repeatedly rocking Thurman with a variety of shots. Even when Thurman put together a solid fifth round, he was stunned several times in the final minute and left with blood on his face. But Thurman gathered himself and soundly beat Pacquiao through the middle rounds, forcing Pacquiao to show off his durable chin. Pacquiao reversed the momentum in the 10th with a series of big shots, including a punch to the body that sent Thurman stumbling away in obvious pain. Both fighters pushed to the final bell and embraced. Pacquiao won the final round on two judges’ cards, while Feldman’s 12th-round score for Thurman kept Pacquiao from winning by unanimous decision. After graciously congratulating Pacquiao, Thurman called for a rematch. The pro-Pacquiao Vegas crowd vocally approved.Nearly 25 years after a 16-year-old Pacquiao stepped onto the scales for his pro debut with rocks in his pockets just to make the 105-pound minimum weight, this middle-aged politician showed he could have several years left in a day job that paid him a guaranteed $10 million on Saturday night.last_img read more

De Bruyne Fatigue has nothing to do with injuries

first_imgKevin De Bruyne says his injuries have nothing to do with fatigue despite the fact that he only rested three weeks out of the year.Kevin De Bruyne, 27, made his return to the field with Manchester City against Everton last week after being sidelined since November. De Bruyne admits that although he and other footballers don’t get much rest throughout the year, that being tired has nothing to do with his injury-plagued season.“There’s nothing I can do – it was two accidents,” said De Bruyne, according to FourFourTwo. “I wasn’t exhausted. I think in general people need a good summer break, sometimes we play for 11.5 months at a time and there is not enough time to rest.“I had a rest of about three weeks – after 12 months of playing. Is that short? Probably, yes. But I felt OK to come back. There’s not a lot to say, I came back and trained and was out after one week – it’s just the way it goes.Jose Mourinho is sold on Lampard succeeding at Chelsea Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho wanted to give his two cents on Frank Lampard’s odds as the new Chelsea FC manager, he thinks he will succeed. There really…“I’m happy with my body because I know I have no problems with muscles. They were both just accidents, the second time also. I felt my knee and it pops, so you just work hard and try to be back as soon as possible.“I played the most of anyone last year – in the whole world. And I played the World Cup without a problem.“I think the most important thing is having a summer break – if you have that you can feel OK but there is always a time in someone’s career where you feel a bit less.“But I felt all right, it was just a shame that when I came back after one week, I was out for two-and-a-half months. I was happy to come back and worked really hard but after three games it happened again. So, I think it’s part of your career and in the end it’s just the way it is.”last_img read more

Star Trek 4 movie reportedly shelved but more shows on the way

first_imgEnlarge ImageThe cinematic future of the Star Trek Enterprise looks a bit grim. Paramount Pictures While Star Trek: Discovery is impressing fans with an extra dose of “action, wit and color,” it looks like the Star Trek 4 movie has been put on hold indefinitely. (Disclosure: CBS is CNET’s parent company.)Star Trek’s first female director, S.J. Clarkson, is jumping off the Enterprise to direct the upcoming HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, Deadline reported Tuesday. In August 2018, the Hollywood Reporter reported that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth (who played Kirk’s father in the 2009 Star Trek film) might not rejoin the series due to contract problems. With both the director gone and two of the stars walking away due to salary disputes, Star Trek 4 sadly won’t be engaging audiences anytime soon. Paramount Pictures didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.  But Star Trek fans shouldn’t feel too distraught. In addition to Star Trek: Discovery, fans also have more than one new animated series to look forward to.On Tuesday, producer and writer Alex Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter there’ll be a “minimum of two” animated series as he continues to build out the Star Trek franchise. In addition to Star Trek: Lower Decks (the half-hour animated comedy from Rick and Morty producer Mike McMahan), CBS All Access has ordered two more installments of shortform series Star Trek: Short Treks. If that’s not enough new Star Trek shows for fans, there’s also the Patrick Stewart-led untitled Picard series, a Star Trek: Discovery spinoff starring Michelle Yeoh, and The Starfleet Academy from producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage in the works.Season 2 of Discovery premieres on CBS All Access in the US on Jan. 17, and on Netflix around the world. The new season begins with an episode titled Brother, which picks up right where season 1 left off with the arrival of the Enterprise. 14 Photos Tags Share your voice Culture: Your hub for everything from film and television to music, comics, toys and sports.Star Trek: Discovery taps classic fun for new season: From the return of Spock to the lighter tone, this IS your father’s Star Trek. Existence of exoplanet Fomalhaut b called into question

first_img(PhysOrg.com) — Fomalhaut b, thought to be the first exoplanet photographed directly, has come under increased scrutiny due to evidence of an unexpected divergence from its expected orbit. Paul Kalas, James Graham and their colleagues identified the planet in 2008 while studying photographs taken by the Hubble telescope in 2004 and 2006. At that time it appeared Fomalhaut b orbited just inside a dust cloud that circles around Fomalhaut, the star at the center of that solar system. Now however, new photographs of Fomalhaut b show that it actually crosses into the dust cloud, causing Toronto astronomer Ray Jayawardhana, at a recent exoplanet conference, to suggest that Fomalhaut b may not be an exoplanet after all. An exoplanet called Fomalhaut b has been photographed in an unexpected spot — so is it even an exoplanet at all? Image credit: NASA The whole story actually began back in 2005 when evidence arose from studies of the dust belt surrounding Fomalhaut, suggesting that at least one exoplanet (any planet not in our own solar system) existed in the system due to the behavior of the dust cloud. After years of studying photographs from Hubble, Kalas and his team came upon Fomalhaut b, an apparent exoplanet about the size of Jupiter (and three times its mass), orbiting some 1.72×1010 km from its sun. Unfortunately, more evidence regarding the exoplanet could not be had due to the malfunction of the camera onboard Hubble. It wasn’t until just last year that another picture of Fomalhaut b was finally made using a different camera on Hubble. The problem was, the exoplanet appeared in a different place than astronomers expected; a problem that has various astronomers offering various explanations. Some suggest that the projected orbit was wrong, while others say that maybe it’s not a planet at all, but a background star or something else altogether.Another problem is that there are other apparent anomalies as well. It’s too bright for its size example. Also, why aren’t other ground-based infrared telescopes able to detect its presence? Jayawardhana says that all of this combined information or lack thereof, should be enough to have Fomalhaut b removed from the exoplanet.eu database. Kalas, in response suggests that 1RXJ1609, an exoplanet that Jayawardhana and his team are studying, should be reviewed more closely as well. The whole argument, if that’s what it is, appears to suggest that perhaps more stringent means should be established for classifying exoplanets before they are announced as such. Also maybe, those astronomers in the field who seem to be just as interested in the limelight as in making new discoveries should perhaps take a closer look at how they are coming off to those reading about their spats in the press. Calendar of the untimely

first_imgThe Raqs Media Collective’s solo show at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) takes the form of an extended conversation around the concepts of time and the untimely which run through much of the collective’s past and present work, and acts as a working laboratory of the ideas that the practice of the Raqs collective is considering today, as it faces the future. With more than fifty works in a range of media – video, installations, mixed media assemblages,  sound, photography, print and sculpture – Raqs turns Jaipur House, the original home of the NGMA, into a magical, labyrinthine container of stories, riddles, enigmas and possibilities. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’This is kind of art making that is quirky, intensely intellectual, humorous, poetic as well as committed to the asking of tough questions in a turbulent world. The collective’s sustained history of more than twenty years of working and thinking together is reflected in this multi-layered exhibition which twists and turns the way we think about  time, finds lost constellations in the sky, argues with the epics, asks questions about the meaning of value, strikes back at time, thinks about war, reflects on the urban condition, considers the laboring body and addresses the future of a four year old child.
